How it all started...

In 2008 we purchased a beautiful little piece of forested land in our community - Kahnawake Mohawk Territory. Finally... a place to build our dream home and establish a small farm!!

We're both very concerned about the well being of the earth and our future generations. We wanted to incorporate our values into the construction of our home. After years of thinking and planning, we decided to build a strawbale insulated house.

We've lived in the Kanata Healthy House for the last seven years. This strawbale house was built as a demo house through Lynn's work. It was the first time such a house was built in our community, and although it has its flaws, we're convinced that this is the way to go. Beyond the environmental benefits and energy savings, the aesthetics of strawbale homes tipped the scales. We love the warmth of the wide walls and the organic feeling of the straw-stucco combination!

Besides the straw bale feature of our home, we focussed on creating a passive solar home with a good design for the efficient flow of every day life. The house is slab-on-grade with radiant in-floor heating on the first floor and second floor bathroom/laundry room, and radiators in the bedrooms. Many of the materials to be used in the home were reclaimed from the demolition of the old Karonhianonhnha school.

Will is a carpenter and he is building our home with his own hands... every step of the way. We have two young sons a five-year-old and one born just after the concrete pour this June (he waited!). Our oldest is patiently awaiting the completion of the house so he can spend more time wrestling with his Dad!

We're very grateful for all the help we have received from friends and family. We couldn't have made our own house design a reality if it weren't for Will's very patient engineering & drafting family members & Lynn's interior decorator mom / babysitting parents. Niawenhko:wa!

We hope you enjoy our journey in making this special home a reality!
